Justin Randall Interview

Current West Ranch Player

If you could visit any baseball stadium in America, where would you go?

If I could visit any baseball field in America, I would visit the Texas Ranger’s Ballpark in Arlington because it would be fun to see the great architectural style of the brick buildings that make up the stadium.

I understand you have a huge waterslide in your backyard. How in the world did you talk your parents into building that?

Actually, when I was little, my family had a little built-in Jacuzzi in my old backyard. Then, when we moved, we had extra room in the back of our yard. As a surprise, my dad designed a huge waterslide without even telling us.

You have a younger brother who also plays baseball. Do you make an effort to help him out or do you prefer to give him a beat down when your parents aren’t around?

My brother is an okay kid, if he’s in a good mood. Usually he is a little brat, but I know how to treat him, if you know what I mean. But on the baseball field, he is one of the most determined and focused kids I have ever seen.

What is your favorite baseball memory?

My favorite baseball memory is when I was 12 years old and I was playing 3 rd base. There was 1 out, a man on 1 st and 2 nd. Then, there was a hard hit ball down the 3 rd base side so I dove, but missed. Now the bases were loaded and the next batter took the first pitch down the line foul and I dove for it and caught it. Then, I dove back to 3 rd base to get the 3 rd out to finish the inning. I also hit my first homerun in that game too.

If Mama Randall gets you a new iPod for Christmas, what are the first three songs you put on it?

If my mom bought me a new iPod, I would put “American Idiot”, by Greenday, “Back in Black”, by AC/DC, and “Are You Gonna Be My Girl?”, by Jet.

If you were stranded on an island and could bring only three items with you, what would you bring?

If I were stranded on an island, I would bring my Bible, my Joe DiMaggio signed baseball, and a fully fueled 100-ft. yacht so I could get off the island.

If you could take any girl on the planet to the Homecoming Dance, who would you choose?

If I could take any girl to the Homecoming Dance, I would take Halle Berry.

You just found a million dollars in your baseball bag. What do you do with the money?

If I found a million dollars, I’d put 300k in my bank account, buy a Mazda RX-8, and use the rest of the money to buy a beach house in Cancun.

Is there someone in your life that has inspired you as a player and/or as a person?

My mom is a great inspiration to me because she sets high standards for my siblings and me. She always tells us to strive for the highest achievement in all that we do. Whether it is in school, life’s decisions, or playing the game of baseball. We have been taught to always do the best we can. I have learned to set high standards for myself, which is why I have achieved so much in school and sports.

Has high school lived up to your expectations or has it been different than you thought it would be?

Life at high school is pretty weird at Ranch Pico, because it is so small, and we are limited to where we can go and what we can do during brunch and lunch. When we move across the street next year, I think we will have the time of our lives. For me high school is like home, because I am having a blast.

The coaches like to challenge the players intellectually with trivia questions in exchange for running. As an extremely smart student, do you find this part of our running program enjoyable?

I like the trivia questions because it challenges our minds, while helping us work hard for the greatest game of all. For me and the rest of the team, I think the work we are doing now is starting to show and will definitely pay off in the long run.

Describe your experience with the West Ranch baseball program?

The West Ranch baseball program is great. I think the program has created a determined team of very athletic kids who are willing and able to go all the way in the spring. I think the blocked schedule is great for a new high school baseball team because without it and the great coaching staff, we wouldn’t be able to practice as much as we do and thus be as good as we are now.
