Roberto Lopez

USC Player

I understand you’re an accomplished piano player. What is more difficult to do, hit a college level curve ball or play the piano?

Well, I’ve been playing the piano for quite some time now (since I was four years old) and I just do it for enjoyment. It is not very difficult to play the piano as much as it is to hit a curve ball, considering I’ve been playing the piano longer than I’ve been trying to hit a curve ball.

As a Braves fan, is it difficult to see Gary Sheffield in pinstripes?

Yes, very. I mean, in every team he’ll be in, he’s always going to play hard and I’ll be a big fan, but it was a disappointment when he went with the Yankees because the Braves were a good team when he was with them. Also, Chipper and Andrew Jones, among others made a good combination of competitive players that formed a great team.

What is your favorite music and if you’re on American Idol, what song are you singing?

It’s very difficult to choose one genre because there is so much music I like. I would have to say that my favorite type of music is progressive metal and rock. If I was on American Idol, I would sing The Accolade II by Symphony X.

Describe your emotions the first day you took the field as a Trojan.

It was one of the greatest feelings I’ve ever had. Being part of this team and being on a field where Randy Johnson, Mark Prior, Barry Zito, and other have played is really an honor.

You earned All-Palomar League honors while hitting .410 with 13 homeruns as a high school senior at Rancho Bernardo last year. Describe what it’s like winning a league championship?

It’s a good feeling when other teams fear you and recognize you for being a league champion for more than 7 years in a row. That program has had many good players and it’s tough to let the program down; everyone works as hard as they can and I enjoyed every year with my teammates.

We brought our high school team down to watch you guys play earlier this year and you threw a guy out from centerfield trying to score on a single up the middle. How fired up were you after that play?

It was definitely one of the best, if not the best, plays I’ve ever made. As soon as I threw the ball and saw that it was on a straight line, I was just hoping it got before the runner. When the umpire called the runner out and the crowd and my teammates from the dugout got up, it felt like we had just won a world series. It was one of the best feeling ever.

What is it like playing for Coach Gillespie at USC?

It has been a fun learning experience. He’s a good coach with great knowledge about baseball and life. I’m constantly learning new things from him.

What advice would you give to a high school player that wants to play baseball at the next level?

Work hard every step of the way because competition only gets harder. You’ll be rewarded for your hard work. A player with good work ethic is one that will always succeed.

If you could invite any three people in the history of the world over for dinner, whom would you choose?

Gary Sheffield, Maximus (The Gladiator) and Jim Carrey.
