Kristin Burrill

Coach's Wife

Christmas 2004

Those of us around Coach Burrill know that you couldn’t have been attracted to him because of his good looks. So explain how the two of you ended up together.

Well, believe it or not, it was Coach Burrill’s good looks that I was attracted to. We have known each other since we were 9 years old. We were family friends growing up. It wasn’t until Coach’s junior prom (see picture at bottom of page) that we fell in love and we have never looked back. He is the greatest guy I have ever met. He is the most caring and compassionate person that I know.

How good of a girl’s soccer coach is Burrill and does he secretly enjoy the sport?

Coach is an awesome girl’s soccer coach. The girls just loved him and he made it lots of fun to learn soccer. He is now coaching our son’s team. Coach even made the comment that 6 year old girls were easier to coach than 6 year old boys. Yes, I think he does secretly like the sport of soccer. Shhh!

There is a good chance that the West Ranch baseball program sees more of your husband than you do. Do you mind being a “baseball widow?”

No I don’t mind being a “baseball widow.” Baseball has always been a part of our lives together and Coach’s high school teams are just another part of our lives. I am a very independent person so his long hours away from home really don’t bother me. My kids and I enjoy going to the games whenever we can so we are a part of the baseball program too.

What are the chances that you end up down the road teaching dance and Coach stays home with the kids?

I would love to be teaching dance sometime very soon.  I am currently working on my physical education credential.  Ideally, I would like to be at West Ranch along side Coach. Coach staying home with the kids?  Not likely. Can you imagine what a mess the house would be!

Your daughter, Kari, is a devout L.A. Kings fan. Do you share the same passion for hockey that she and your husband have?

Absolutely! I became a Kings fan in the 80’s. Coach got me hooked! Go Kings!

Besides listening to Coach complain about parents’ emails, web site problems, late uniform orders, player behavior issues, and unruly assistant coaches, what are some of the things that you like to do as a family?

We like to go on adventures. Places that we like are Disneyland, sporting events, the beach, and bowling. But most of all, we just like being together. Our time together is precious!

If the kids were at school and Coach was at work and the house was completely empty, what would you do with the free time?

Free time does not exist in this house. There is always work to be done and errands to run. But if I did have free time to myself, I would probably love to watch a good movie or curl up with a good book.

You have recently decided to go back to school and get a teaching credential. What prompted this decision? Were you tired of Coach having all the war stories to himself?

I have always wanted to teach. That is why I went to college but circumstances have kept me from following that dream. Being around all of Coach’s teacher friends and the great kids he has had in class and on the field has made me realize that this is where I still want to be. It is very difficult to return to school after all these years, but I have a lot of support from Coach. If Coach could survive going back to school than I can too!

Is there any truth to the rumor that you will take over as the first base coach at West Ranch in the near future?

Only if the current first base coach were to leave then I might have to step up to the plate. This would be a very sad day.

What has been the most enjoyable part of being “Coach’s Wife?”

Two things—being able to keep the great game of baseball in our lives and the great kids that make it possible.
