Todd Arrowsmith

West Ranch ASB Director

What is the best thing about being an ASB Director?

I love watching students become leaders!!! Especially this year - the students that came into ASB did not have much experience. By the end of this year they have become one of the strongest groups of student leaders that I have ever worked with. I also love putting on events that the school community gets excited about. Putting on a prom and then watching the entire community come out and watch the students parade to the busses is so much fun, and you realize that everyone is there because of the event that you planned…its good for the ego!!!

How exciting is it to be a part of a brand new school and establishing new traditions that will last for years?

Very exciting!!! I can not tell you how much fun this year has been. Events that I have done for years at my previous school – to the point they were taken for granted – are received with much enthusiasm here at West Ranch! There is something special about being part of a brand new school and I will always feel that some of me will be at West Ranch even when I am gone.

You have always supported the baseball programs at Saugus, and now at WR, extremely well. Are you a big fan of the game or is it done out of duty?

I love baseball, I’ve had a glove a in my hand since I was a little kid. Some of my best memories of growing up are of putting together a street game or playing pickle during the summer. I would have played in high school - but I was corrupted by soccer!!!

Is hanging out with Fogel and Smock as much fun as they say it is, or is it all hype?

No hype at all. Half the sayings in my vocabulary come form Smock and Fogel. I have my family members, softball team members, my workout buddies, neighbors, and my secretary occasionally throwing out a “NIGHT!” I truly savor spending quality time with the boys.

How important was it for WR to bring in Casey Burrill as a head baseball coach?

That was a huge hire for our school. It gave us instant credibility that we were serious about providing a varsity experience for our athletes. What Casey did with the Saugus program was incredible, and to bring that to West Ranch is awesome. I know that members of the baseball program realize how lucky they are to have not only Casey, but Snake, Fogel, Smock and Brady. There is no better coaching staff in So Cal than our guys. I’m not biased - its just a fact.

Tell us about one of your more memorable ASB moments.

The one that stand out for me is Grad Night 2003. We were taking our students to Jillian’s at Universal City Walk. It was about an hour before we were supposed to leave and I had an uneasy feeling because the busses had not showed up yet. So I made a call to our Transportation Coordinator and he tells me that the busses are scheduled to come the next day……NIGHT!!!! We were able to round up some school busses and got the students down there only a half-hour late. But that was the worst feeling in the world. Now I look back and laugh about it.

Do you ever get any grief for the events/entertainment you provide at school functions?

Unfortunately yes. I tell my students that they are taking on a very thankless job. you can put on the greatest dance in the world and somebody will find fault with it. Very rarely will you have someone come up and say great job. It bothered me at first, but after doing this for 10 years you get used to it - and the people whose opinions I really value always give me the props. So far here at West Ranch everyone has been very supportive of ASB Events.

If you could have any three bands in the world perform at a school function, who would they be?

Obviously Aerosmith, because of the name and I really like their music, then U2, the best concerts I have ever been too!!! These are all warm-up bands for the greatest band ever…THE OUTSIDE. Smock coming out in his glitter red shirt would be incredible.

Tell us something about you that nobody knows.

I like sappy love songs. KOST is one of my favorite radio stations

If you could attend any three sporting events, which ones would you choose?

Number 3 would be any College Football game in the SEC. Those people know how to fire it up before a game. Number 2 would be Real Madrid vs. Manchester United, say what you want about soccer, but the Euros know how to put on a sporting event. Number 1, (not to sound sappy) any sporting event where my boys are playing. There is nothing better than watching your own kids enjoy the sports that you enjoyed so much growing up.

What is more likely to happen in the life of T.A. on a Saturday night?

    1. Candle lights, soft music, and a fancy Italian dinner
    2. Star Wars Monopoly with the kids
    3. Feet up on the couch watching sports

Actually playing Star Wars Battlefront on the PS2 with my boys kicking my butt. (Wife’s note: That’s baloney – TA is addicted to sports highlights shows…and he’s sitting in the recliner, not the couch)

If you could invite any three people in the history of the world over for dinner, who would they be?

The first would be Constantine I, he was the first Roman Emperor who converted to Christianity, he laid the foundations of post-classical European civilization. He is considered one of the greatest Roman Emperors….I love Greek/Roman History. The second would be Joshua Chamberlin. He held the end of the Union line in Gettysburg. His leadership saved the Union army at Gettysburg, which turned the Civil War into the North’s Favor. Third would be my wife, she is a huge history buff and she would kill me if I went to a history event without her.
